Athena Turek (she/her/hers) – I am a social work intern with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Nevada, Reno, and am currently working towards completing my Master of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania. Additionally, I am working towards supplementary certifications as an EMDR practitioner, a Certified Trauma Professional (CTP), and a Certified Experiential Specialist (CES), as well as receiving training in psychodrama at Phoenix Trauma Center.

I am informed by my social location as a queer, mixed-race, Filipina/White, temporarily able-bodied woman. I view therapy as a space to heal from the past, to delve into topics of identity, and to work against harms caused by oppressive systems. I am passionate about incorporating strengths-based, intersectional, anti-oppressive, and abolitionist frameworks principles, and creating a community that centers healing, liberation, collaboration, and growth.

During my past work at Mural Arts Philadelphia, I explored the power of creative expression and movement in promoting mental health among a diversity of people and look forward to continuing to incorporate art within my therapy practice. I have worked with children, immigrants, refugees, those who have experienced significant trauma or grief, and those experiencing homelessness. At the University of Pennsylvania, I am specializing in working with the LGBTQ+ community and am committed to supporting all folx in their gender and sexuality exploration. My coursework has included education on couples and sex therapy, both areas where I plan to continue my learning. My approach to understanding and promoting intimacy in relationships is informed by Emotion Focused Therapy and attachment theory. I am non-monogamy and kink informed and affirming. Finally, as a dancer and yoga practitioner, I am excited at the healing power of mindfulness and somatic work, and would be happy to bring art, movement, and mindfulness to therapy.

“I hope to support you in creating a life of radical joy, while respecting the sacredness of your truth. I am committed to entering the therapeutic space with humility, openness, and empathy.”

Athena’s typical fee is $85 for individual therapy (50 min); she can work on a flexible sliding scale if needed.
