Psychodynamic theory of defense mechanisms will be presented with emphasis on the similarities and differences between defenses related to addiction and trauma. The neurobiology of trauma will be revisited including an overview of Polyvagal Theory’s conceptualization of the fight\, flight\, and freeze responses to danger. Multiple uses of sociometric group processes to explore defense mechanisms within a group counseling context will be demonstrated. The use of psychodramatic techniques to explore and transform defenses with clients will be presented. \nLearning Objectives:\n1. Describe the function of psychological defense mechanism\n2. Explain one use of sociometry in group work around defenses\n3. Identify one psychodrama technique useful for work with defenses \n  \nCEU STATEMENT \nPhoenix Center for Experiential Trauma Therapy (Lic. #004115) is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers\, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors to offer continuing education for social workers\, marriage and family therapists and professional counselors. Phoenix Center for Experiential Trauma Therapy (Lic. # PSY000215) is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology to offer continuing education for psychologists. Phoenix Center for Experiential Trauma Therapy maintains responsibility for the program. \nAct 48 Credit hours for Pennsylvania educators \nPhoenix Center is an Approved Provider of Act 48 Credits for PA educators. Please inquire about Act 48 credits for each individual workshop. \nExperiential and Psychodrama training hours: \nParticipants at these workshops can receive credit towards certifications through the American Board of Examiners in Sociometry\, Psychodrama\, and Group Psychotherapy* as well as the International Society of Experiential Professionals (CP\, CET\, and CES). *As a Practitioner Applicant for Trainer\, Scott can provide 160 of the required 780 training hours towards CP certification for psychodrama.
