Spontaneity is often misunderstood but in psychodrama context\, spontaneity can be considered a sense of inner freedom – not being held back or inhibited from appropriate action in the moment. Spontaneity allows individuals\, groups\, communities\, organizations\, and nations to have new responses to old situations\, and adequate responses to novel circumstances. Trauma\, both on the individual and collective level\, can impact our sense of freedom and our capacity for spontaneity. This workshop explores the movement from trauma to spontaneity and growth through psychodramatic methods and frameworks.

Content will be taught experientially including demonstrations\, sociometric warm-ups\, and psychodrama vignettes followed by processing to help participants reflect on implementing these experiential tools in their own work. The basics of safe and effective trauma-focused psychodrama will be presented including content on safety\, strengths-based work\, neurobiology\, trauma-informed principles\, and considering a biopsychosocial-spiritual approach. This workshop is designed to teach practical skills for practitioners new to psychodrama or for experienced psychodrama trainees to deepen their practice. Trauma-focused psychodrama research continues to emerge suggesting its effectiveness in treatment PTSD and offering clients corrective emotional experiences. This presentation will explore both the mysticism and the science of trauma-focused psychodrama. Spontaneity will be emphasized as the curative agent in psychodrama – spontaneity theory\, assessment\, and research will be referenced including teaching on the spontaneity assessment inventory revised (SAIR). Psychodrama theoretical concepts such as tele\, the sociodynamic effect\, warming-up\, creativity\, sociometry\, the three phases of a group\, and Moreno’s mystical ideas will be presented. Multiple psychodrama interventions and experiential sociometry processes (such as doubling\, mirroring\, role reversal\, role playing\, sociodrama\, and concretization) will be discussed. Cultural humility and responsiveness will be emphasized in the context of psychodrama practice with diverse spiritual belief systems in clinical contexts. \nLearning Objectives: \n1). Jacob L. Moreno\, the founder of sociometry and psychodrama\, was one of the first to challenge the medical model and suggest that mental illness is also a product of relationships\, groups\, and society. Many of the ideas articulated over 100 years ago in his triadic system are being validated by modern interpersonal neurobiology and attachment research. As humans\, we are social animals and our neurobiological wiring promotes attachment\, connection\, group membership\, and community belonging. As mental health professionals\, relationships are the vehicle from which we work with our clients – and social factors are often the crux of the client’s concerns. Moreno’s social atom offers practitioners with a dynamic process that can be used as for assessment\, intervention\, treatment planning\, or warm-up to psychodrama. Using experiential methods such as sociometry\, sociodrama\, and psychodrama we will explore attachment styles\, the impact of trauma/addiction on relationships\, and the essential nature of relationships and community in recovery. Psychodramatic and sociometric concepts such as spontaneity\, the warming-up process\, the social atom\, role theory\, tele\, and the sociodynamic effect will be presented while various interventions will be taught\, such as doubling\, mirroring\, role reversal\, sculpting\, role training\, and role playing. The psychodramatic approach will be demonstrated through experiential teaching methods to help familiarize participants with the mechanics of facilitating psychodrama processes and employing its various interventions. Foundational group therapy concepts will also be presented including group development phases\, group dynamics\, the role of group cohesion\, and the efficacy of group psychotherapy as a treatment approach in general. \nLearning Objectives: \n1). That number is expected to grow by 12 percent by the end of the decade\, making social work one of the fastest growing professions in the nation\, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Social workers have played an integral role in securing passage of some of the most important issues of our time including the Civil Rights and Women’s Rights movements and pushed for social programs we now take for granted\, including the minimum wage\, a 40-hour work week\, Social Security and Medicare. DESCRIPTION:Vicarious Post-Traumatic Growth for Mental Health Professionals: A Free Peer Support Workshop for Self-Care and Community \n\n*This is a peer-support group\, not a CEU event. \nAbout our bi-monthly workshop series:  \nBurnout\, compassion fatigue\, and vicarious trauma are on the rise for mental health professionals. The importance of self-care\, peer-support\, and community are evident for those working in the field. We must attend to our own needs in order to best support the clients and communities that we work with. This workshops series (every other month) will focus on validating the experience of mental health professionals and cultivating vicarious post-traumatic growth – the phenomenon of professionals growing (personally and professionally) as a result of working with clients who have experienced trauma and adversity. These workshops are open to anyone who is a mental health professional (therapists\, social workers\, supervisors\, caseworkers\, support staff\, administrators\, educators\, marketers\, etc.). Each session will be facilitated by a Phoenix Center staff member employing various experiential group processes to promote peer support\, connection\, and restoration. \nNext Session: \nDate & Time: Monday June 6\, 2022\, from 6:30-8:30pm \nLocation: Phoenix Center for Experiential Trauma Therapy\, 524 N. Post Pandemic World\nA Two Day Conference: April 30 – May 1\, 2022\nWidener University\, Chester\, PA \nAll day Saturday\, April 30\, 2022 (9:30-12:30 and 2:00-5:00) \nA-1: Trauma-Focused Psychodrama: Safe Experiential Processes for Embodied Healing\nDr. Scott Giacomucci\, DSW\, LCSW\, BCD\, CGP\, FAAETS\, TEP \nThis workshop presents trauma-focused psychodrama which moves the group process beyond\nwords and into action. The importance of safety and strengths for trauma work will be\nhighlighted along with a basic introduction to Moreno’s triadic system – Sociometry\,\nPsychodrama\, and Group Psychotherapy. As the field of neuroscience and trauma research\nexpands\, evidence points to trauma’s impact on the body and the importance of holistic\ninterventions that involve the whole person (body\, mind\, social\, spirit). Participants in this\nworkshop will experience the power of experiential methods through strengths-based\npsychodrama while learning multiple experiential tools that can be incorporated into practice in\ndiverse settings. \n1. Develop practitioners’ skills in leading process groups\nThis workshop will provide group therapists with additional skills for enhancing process\ngroups\, assessing the sociodynamics of a group\, and engaging participants in the group\nprocess.\n2. Examine the use of groups for healing trauma\nThis workshop will focus on psychodrama as an experiential and holistic approach to\ntrauma healing supported by neuroscience and clinical research. Psychodrama allows\nclients to have corrective emotional experiences impossible otherwise while renegotiating\nhow the body keeps the score.\n3. Identify the needs of traumatized professional caregivers and how group process may\npromote healing\nThough this is a Saturday group led like a therapy group\, we will not do a psychodrama\nfocused on a participant’s individual trauma. Instead\, the psychodrama in the afternoon\nwill focus on strengths\, support\, professional goals\, or vicarious post-traumatic growth\n(depending on the group’s choice)\n4. Identify methods for reawakening the human-to-human kindness connection\nStrength-based processes demonstrated in the workshop certainly will tap into the\nhuman-to-human kindness connection and provide participants with methods for\nreawakening it within their own groups/communities.\n5. Use experiential modalities to enhance understanding of group process in outpatient and\ninpatient groups\nThis workshop teaches and demonstrates psychodrama\, the first experiential therapy\n(now over 100 years old). The facilitator will include clinical examples and insight\nrelated to psychodrama practice across the treatment continuum based on his experience\nin inpatient\, PHP\, outpatient\, and multi-day workshops.
