A Deep-Dive into Dementia, Mental Health, and Trauma

When examining mental health and dementia, they may seem very different, but both fundamentally involve the brain and can significantly affect daily life. Researchers estimate that by 2060, 42% of Americans over the age of 55 will develop dementia, a sharp increase from the current rate of 10.9%, which is already a significant number. Even if we are not working with older adults, our clients will eventually age, and how we treat clients today will impact their outcomes later in life.

In this comprehensive workshop, we will provide an overview of the four most common forms of dementia, co-occurring mental health diagnoses, and impacts on the brain. We will look at how trauma in childhood can impact dementia diagnoses, the connection between depression and dementia, and explore many overlooked early dementia symptoms.

Many of us in the mental health field are trained to identify when an individual is at imminent risk of harm to themselves or others, especially related to self-harm, however, once the imminent risk is related to cognitive impairment, there is a change in how and where to seek help.  Whether working directly with a client who is experiencing cognitive changes, or their caregivers, this workshop will also provide valuable and practical guidance on how to make ethical decisions regarding mandatory reporting of abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

This workshop is both didactic and experiential. Participants will be asked to participate, move, and engage with one another.
