The Magic and Science of Trauma-Focused Psychodrama: Spirit, Mind, and Body in Action

Dr. Scott Giacomucci, DSW, LCSW, BCD, FAAETS, PAT

Plenary Presentation

Psychodrama’s existential philosophy suggests that human beings are first and foremost cosmic beings. Jacob Moreno, psychodrama’s founder, developed a mystical philosophy that honors the inherent power and worth of every human. His action-methods bring the body and the soul into treatment while also emphasizing psychosocial realities. Considering the biopsychosocial-spiritual impacts of trauma, psychodrama is uniquely situated as a treatment approach to renegotiate the impacts of trauma. Psychodrama allows us to go places that would be impossible otherwise. On the psychodrama stage, one can speak to deceased loved ones, travel forward in time, revisit painful moments in the past, speak to God, and engage in dialogue with parts of self. Trauma-focused psychodrama research continues to emerge suggesting its effectiveness in treatment PTSD and offering clients corrective emotional experiences that may be impossible otherwise. This presentation will explore both the magic and the science of trauma-focused psychodrama as a biopsychosocial-spiritual approach.
