Are You Interested in Interning at The Phoenix Center?

Our counseling and social work graduate interns are able to provide quality service at a low cost. This is an opportunity to grow together! Our center understands the need for quality services and the financial difficulties some may have accessing services. Our internship program allow us to bring our clients low-cost trauma therapy services.
As our placement has become quite competitive (we receive 40-60 applications each year), we have been prioritizing students who already have experience (or directly translatable experience) as a counselor, training in trauma and/or an experiential therapy modalities, and BIPOC students. Furthermore, we will prioritize interns who share our goal of making quality trauma therapy services accessible to diverse communities.
Commitment and Internship Types
Due to the nature of our clientele needing long-term therapy and the time/money investment involved for the center to host each intern, we are only able to accept the below types of internships:
Graduate Counseling Students: those who can commit to doing all three semesters with us (practicum + internship 1 + internship 2).
Graduate Social Work Students: those who can commit one of their field placement years with us.
* Due to gaps between semesters and the need to ensure clients have consistent care, we prioritize those who can commit to beginning their internship one month in advance, or one month follow the end of the semester.
We do not have opportunities for undergraduate internships at this time.
Deadlines for applications:
- October 20th deadline for January start date (spring semester)
- February 1st deadline for May start date (summer semester)
- March 1st deadline for August/September start date (fall semester)
What does a Phoenix Center Internship Look Like?

Our clinical interns often receive more training on trauma in their year-long internship than many licensed therapists. You will be given access to all on-site workshops offered to professionals in the field, including multi-day psychodrama workshops, IFS workshops, and other training related to trauma, experiential modalities, and clinical practice.
You will engage in a variety of weekly support activities, including:
- Weekly one-on-one supervision with a task supervisor
- Weekly intern group supervision with Dr. Scott Giacomucci
- Weekly team supervision with Dr. Scott Giacomucci and other licensed therapists at the practice
- Recommendations to take both parts of EMDR Training at EMDRIA
- Bi-weekly EMDR Group Supervision
- Bi-weekly IFS Learning/Support Group with an IFSI-Trained Level 3 Clinician
- Opportunities to create and co-create support groups and therapy groups
As a Phoenix Center intern, you will be engaging in one-on-one therapy with clients, both in-person and virtually. Many of our prospective clients come to us for EMDR Therapy, and we encourage all interns to take EMDR Training within the first two months of internship.
Outside of the knowledge and experience you will gain, many of our interns leave having gained a strong network and connection with both their peers and our clinical team. Our internship is a large commitment, and we honor that commitment by giving you the best experience and training we can offer.
We strongly encourage Black, Indigenous, People of Color, LGBTQIA+, and bilingual people to apply.
