When we experience trauma, it often impacts how we form and build relationships with others. This impact can last for decades, and while individual therapy can help us heal from trauma and re-engage with others, we sometimes need help navigating the complexities of our relationships. Engaging in couples or family therapy can help to open up communication, identify cycles that keep reoccurring, and learn how to connect with each other in a non-judgmental way.
Couples Therapy
The first session is typically spent exploring the relationship: your history, what is bringing you to couples therapy, and some of your goals in therapy and the relationship. Following a full history, the therapist will typically schedule a session with each individual and then come back together for the remainder of the sessions. In couples therapy, we focus on the relationship as our client, rather than two individuals.
Family Therapy

The first session in family therapy explores the family’s history, goals and any cycles that keep reoccurring. Everyone in the family will have the opportunity to speak and be welcomed into family therapy. Our goal is to help the family slow down, notice reoccurring cycles that impact relationships within the family, and also highlight strengths that already exist. Family therapy can include immediate and extended family members, children, adults, and older adults.
Cost
Our couples and family sessions are typically offered at a slightly higher rate than our individual therapy sessions. Having more than one client can increase time in scheduling, documentation, and often our therapists engage in ongoing, specialized, continuing education. Our rates vary depending on therapist selected, but most sessions are between $165-$225/hour. Our services are considered out-of-network, and we can provide you with a monthly superbill to submit to your insurance for reimbursement, if you have out-of-network benefits.
At The Phoenix Center we have several therapists that offer family and couples therapy. We are able to offer both in-person (located in Media, PA) and virtual offerings in PA, NJ, DE, and DC.
