About the Workshop

This workshop focuses on the importance of thoughtful suicide assessment throughout the process of trauma treatment. Suicide and adversity are closely related. Trauma survivors have much higher rates of suicide attempts than others. Suicide is often an attempt to escape the pain and suffering associated with past adversity and current traumatic stress or grief. The process of engaging clients in trauma therapy while continuously assessing for suicidality is delicate but essential. As we assist clients in addressing the wounds of past adversity, we must be thoughtful in helping to keep them within their window of tolerance. This workshop will explore this balance, draw connections between trauma and suicide, and discuss the basics of suicide assessment.

Learning Objectives:

Differentiate between suicidal thoughts, plans, and intentions
Describe one connection between trauma and suicide
Explain how the process of engaging in trauma therapy could increase or decrease suicidality

*Please note that this is workshop will include both didactic and experiential learning components. The experiential learning structures include demonstrations of psychodrama and other experiential processes which often include (optional) personal disclosures from participants. While personal growth is often a byproduct of experiential learning in psychodrama, the primary purpose of this workshop is training. If you are seeking a workshop for personal growth or seeking a professional training event that is entirely didactic (lecture/powerpoint), this is probably not the best workshop for you.
