Trauma impacts most of us at some point and can have a pervasive impact on our communities or organizations. In the midst or aftermath of a trauma, it can be hard to determine how to move forward or what type of support our community or staff may need. Even the most experienced trauma and mental health experts can be frozen and overwhelmed in the aftermath of trauma because it impacts our ability to think clearly, to make decisions, to articulate our needs, and to connect with others.

We have devoted our entire practice and careers to helping individuals, communities, and organizations grow from trauma. We can guide you in creating a crisis response that fits the needs of your organization and offers direct education and emotional support to your staff.

In our experience working with community and organizational trauma/crisis, here are some of the services and elements that we found to be important and helpful:

  • Onsite aid – we can send therapists to your organization to work with you and your team
  • Quick response – we can coordinate an event at your site quickly
  • Education – basic information about trauma and trauma responses can be incredibly validating and helpful
  • Support – empathy, presence, and support are essential as soon as possible after a trauma
  • Mutual aid and empowerment – our therapists are trained in experiential group approaches that empower group members to support each other and develop relationships that promote ongoing peer-support beyond the session
  • Ongoing services – we can offer ongoing 1-1, group, or organizational sessions based on your needs (either on-site at your organization, online, or at our center in Media, PA)
  • Assessment and referral – our staff can provide additional assessment and referrals for any of your team members who may need additional support
  • Organizational consultation – our team can also offer training and consultation regarding the implementation of trauma-informed care principles for your agency

REVIEWS FROM PAST CRITICAL INCIDENT RESPONSES

“Dr. Scott and his team are the go-to experts in the field of Trauma. Following a workplace fatality, the first person we reached out to was Scott. Even though we have a number of professionally licensed counselors on staff, it was important for us to speak to the experts in the field of trauma to make sure we were doing the best that we could do for our client. As always, Scott was kind, compassionate and understanding. Phoenix Center is always the first recommendation I make in situations involving trauma.”

Director – Employee Assistance Program for large hospital system

“The feedback from all who attended was very positive. Everyone who attended felt that they were loved, supported, and better understood after the sessions. It is wonderful for all here to have Brian, Chrissie, and all at Phoenix as a resource. We truly appreciate all you are doing and are so grateful you gave us immediate support with the trauma our organization experienced.”

Executive Vice President of a financial/corporate institution

“We had a traumatic loss that rocked our world. Dr. Scott immediately made himself available and spent an entire day with our community (staff and residents). The time with Scott took a potentially devastating situation and turned it into an opportunity for understanding and growth and began the healing process. Scott is a consummate professional who does an amazing job of taking his years of trauma training and presenting it in a manner that is understandable and relatable. I will always be grateful for Scott being there for us in a time of true crisis.”

Logistics

In the direct aftermath of trauma, a quick response is necessary. The presence of support and attunement is one of the most important preventative factors in mitigating the potential of long-term traumatic stress responses. We are here to help you and your community or organization in these tragic situations. At the Phoenix Center, we have an entire team of trauma specialists who have been specifically trained to help people navigate the negative impacts of trauma and adversity while promoting post-traumatic growth. We have provided crisis responses and consultation to various organizations including treatment centers, recovery houses, hospital systems, non-profit organizations, government agencies, schools/universities, corporate/financial institutions, professional communities/groups, and international groups facing a variety of crises including gun violence, suicide, overdose deaths, tragic accidents, violence or threats of violence, natural disasters, war or armed conflict, acts of terrorism, and collective traumas such as oppression, political violence, and racial trauma.

The structure of a response at your organization can vary depending on your needs/wants, the nature of the trauma, characteristics of your organization, and availability of your staff. We have found that it works quite well to start with a 2-3 hour session that involves brief education on trauma and its potential impacts, followed by group processes to help participants express their emotions, connect with peers, develop skills for self-regulation and supporting others, and provide resources for continued learning/support. In many cases, it may be beneficial to offer this type of group at multiple locations, for different departments, or in targeted sections of your community (such as one group for managers and another for staff; one group for clients/residents and another for staff; one group for youth and another for families; etc.).

Our standard cost for this type of offering is $475 per hour of group session which includes one therapist and one graduate intern coming onsite to your organization and offering support.  Sliding scale can be offered in some special circumstances, please contact us.  Individual offerings on site, online, and at our Media office vary depending on the therapist.
