About the Workshop:

This psychodrama training workshop will introduce sociometry, psychodrama, and group therapy interventions while exploring the wounded healer archetype. We will co-create community together to help address the impacts of countertransference, burnout, and vicarious trauma – which are likely to impact all of us at some point. Most of us choose to become mental health professionals and helpers because of our own experiences of adversity. In this workshop, we will explore the ways we have learned to make meaning from past adversity and find purpose in our careers. Multiple sociometric and psychodramatic interventions will be taught including concretization, empty chair, doubling, role reversal, and future projection. Research on best practices for addressing burnout and vicarious trauma, while promoting vicarious posttraumatic growth will be introduced.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the ‘wounded healer’ archetype as defined by Carl Jung
2.  Describe countertransference
3.  List the three phases of a psychodrama group
4.  Explain three strategies for promoting safety in psychodrama
5.  Identify the role of spontaneity in psychodrama
6.   Identify the relationship between spontaneity and traumatic stress
7. Identify the importance of strengths-based approach in trauma-focused psychodrama
8.   Explain the importance of the warming-up process in trauma-focused psychodrama
9. Demonstrate three sociometric group processes
10.  Describe the risks of retraumatization in psychodrama practice with trauma survivors
11. Compare vicarious trauma and vicarious posttraumatic growth
12. Identify two methods to reduce burnout and vicarious trauma
13.  Discuss two practices to cultivate vicarious posttraumatic growth
14.  Describe the importance of professionals addressing their own sources of countertransference
15.  Identify psychodrama’s capacity for corrective emotional experiences
16.  Demonstrate two psychodramatic interventions
17.  Explain how identities of the client and therapist can influence the potential of countertransference
18. Describe how effective self-care practices may vary based on identity

*Please note that this is workshop will include both didactic and experiential learning components. The experiential learning structures include demonstrations of psychodrama and other experiential processes which often include (optional) personal disclosures from participants. While personal growth is often a byproduct of experiential learning in psychodrama, the primary purpose of this workshop is training. If you are seeking a workshop for personal growth or seeking a professional training event that is entirely didactic (lecture/powerpoint), this is probably not the best workshop for you.
